Weight Gain After Liposuction
Liposuction is targeted and permanent removal of fat cells. Once those fat cells are removed they do not grow back. That is not to say that after someone receives liposuction they cannot gain weight or have the area that was improved by lipo get worse. There is no connection from a physiologic standpoint between the removal of fat cells and weight gain a year later. What is more likely is that the weight gain is due to the things that cause all of us to gain weight; not enough exercise, too much stress, not eating well. There can also be medical reasons for weight gain. It is important to discuss this with your doctor.
Clinical Context
Fat cells are removed mechanically through a cannula, suctioned out based on their location and volume in that specific area. The number of adipocytes in the treated zone drops permanently, but every other fat cell in your body still has the same job: storing excess calories when intake outpaces use. Those remaining cells can enlarge in response to a caloric surplus, which is why weight fluctuations elsewhere are still possible after a good result. Genetics and hormonal signals also influence where fat tends to accumulate, independent of what was removed during surgery.
